A F G H A N I S T A N

  • GlobeRovers Rating: 9 / 10
  • Buzz Line: "DON'T tell your mother you're going to Afghanistan!!"
  • Eagle Eye: Take seriously all advice about which areas are safe and which are not. Few intrepid travellers venture into Afghanistan but those who do, like me, come out very enlightened about the lovely people of this battered land!  In recent history - first the Russians, then the Taliban, and then the Americans. As a Westerner, I was welcomed with open arms (I must say that the villages I visited had no visible presence of the Taliban).
  • Hot Spots: The north eastern areas are safer and for now the only places to visit. Some tourists do venture into Kabul and other areas, which Globerovers would strongly advise against!  Photos posted here were taken in the mountain village of Shughnan, as well as near the town of Ishkashim to the south. Both are close to the Tajikistan border.
  • The Low-down: Go visit Afghanistan. As long as you don't come across the horrible Taliban, you will find very hospitable people. Look at these smiles!

A rare opportunity to photograph an Afghani woman. Generally women don't talk to strangers and on the village paths women even turned their backs at me until I have safely passed. This woman allowed me to take a photo after a lot of smooth talk. She obviously is a very enlightened woman and even speaks some English, which is very rare in this part of the world. I later met her boyfriend in the village (had some local distilled vodka with him) and he was shocked to know she posed for a photo. He said she never wanted him to take a photo with his mobile phone and could not believe that she posed for me. :)
