P A K I S T A N

  • GlobeRovers Rating: 7 / 10
  • Buzz Line: "Come here at your own risk as the Taliban likes Pakistan too."
  • Eagle Eye: Pakistan is generally off limits to most travellers for many good reasons. However, those who do venture here will find it a very diverse and interesting country. It broadly varies from desert scenery in the southwest to majestic mountain peaks and glaciers in the north, which stretches across three mountain ranges namely the Hindu Kush range, Karakoram range, and the Himalayas range.
  • Hot Spots: Pakistan is diverse and offers great desert scenes, mountain scenery complete with valleys, peaks above 8,000 m, and glaciers, as well as great culture, food and some friendly (and some less friendly) people. Stay away from conservative communities of the Sunni and Shia Muslims, in particular at the "Fairy Meadows" near Nanga Parbat peak. The Shia Ismaili Muslims in the Hunza Valley are generally well educated, very friendly, and happy to have their photos taken.
  • The Low-down: Plan very well and make sure to research the safety situation before departure. Best would be to hire a guide to take care of you! When hiking in the mountains you often will be joined, at no charge, by a policeman with machine gun just to make sure you stay alive.
