S V A L B A R D (near the North Pole)

Svalbard is an archipelago in the northern Arctic and forms the most the northern part of Norway. It is about midway between mainland Norway and the North Pole, which means its about 500 miles south of the pole. I only visited the largest island off Spitsbergen and spend time hiking around, dogsledding, glacier caving, and traveling by snow mobile for 400 km. My main purpose was to photograph polar bears, which was as difficult as I expected.

My book with 440 coloured pages
which includes Svalbard's winter wonderland

Dog sledding

Exploring the caves under the glaciers.  Climbed down several meters using a very straight-up ladder and rope. A rather scary but very rewarding experience
